WHY HOME EDUCATE?

If you have reached this website you have probably already found out a little about home education. Yes, it is legal, and no, you don’t have to be a trained teacher to educate your children at home. PACT parents home educate for a wide variety of reasons. Some have become disillusioned with the educational standards within the school system, some have never sent their children to school for ideological reasons, some home educate for religious reasons and some did not feel their children’s special needs were being met within the school system.

Within PACT you will also encounter a wide range of approaches to home education. We do not have a set ideology to which we all subscribe. Some of us are curriculum based, others opt for a child-led learning approach described as ‘autonomous education’.

Whether or not you believe the 50,000 figure given for the number of children being home-educated in the UK, our perception is that the number of families opting for home education is increasing. With that increase come more opportunities to set up clubs and educational groups, such as GCSE and A’ level groups, should you decide to take that route.

RECOMMENDED BOOK

How Children Learn

by John Holt

The author sets out to demonstrate to parents and teachers that learning is as natural as breathing. The ways we learn to talk, to read, to count and to reason, even before we start school, should make the adult trust the child's innate ability. This book also features a critique of methods of learning "about" children, and a chapter of "learning and love".
